Gyarados [Shadowless] Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
This Base Set Gyarados is one of the original English holo rares from the first main Pokémon TCG expansion, giving it a direct link to the hobby’s January 9, 1999 launch era.
Set Lore
Shadowless copies are especially beloved by vintage collectors because they come from the early English Base Set printings before the card frame gained the darker right-side drop shadow seen on later unlimited cards.
Card History
Gyarados has a neat Base Set print-run quirk: Bulbapedia notes that later non-shadowless runs printed the 6/102 collection number too far left, making shadowless copies like this part of the cleaner early layout collectors chase.
In-Game
The card’s attacks, Dragon Rage and Bubble Beam, both come straight from the video games, and Bulbapedia specifically notes Bubble Beam was a move Gyarados could learn in Generation I via TM11.
Cultural Impact
Gyarados itself is one of Pokémon’s most famous evolution stories, inspired by the Chinese Dragon Gate legend in which a carp’s perseverance is rewarded by transformation into a dragon-like being.
