Vintage pullback meets a rush into select singles

Old-school cards fell hard, while Rayquaza, Charizard, and Shining Legends stayed hot

Today's market feels split right down the middle. Vintage and promo names took some ugly 30-day hits, especially Base Set, Gym, and Sword & Shield promo cards, while a smaller group of chase singles kept ripping higher, led by M Rayquaza EX from Roaring Skies at $88.18, up 144.74% and Reshiram & Charizard GX from Double Blaze at $23.03, up 144.15%.

That lines up with what we've been seeing all week. Buyers aren't spraying money across the board, they're getting picky. Strong character cards, dragon names, and a few Japanese niche pieces are getting bids, while weaker vintage liquidity is cracking.

Vintage cards got hit hard, and this doesn't look like a one-day fluke.

Several recognizable older cards posted brutal 30-day drops near 50%. 1st Edition Base Set Magikarp fell to $181.72, down 49.62%. Blaine's Growlithe 1st Edition slid to $11.52, down 49.65%. Mr. Mime from Jungle dropped to $8.94, down 49.42%. When multiple eras of vintage all weaken together, that's usually a sign of thinner buyer depth, not just one random comp. The surprising part is that PSA 10 prices are still miles above raw on many of these, which tells you collectors still want top-condition copies, they just aren't paying up for average raw cards right now.

High-recognition chase cards are still working, especially dragons and tag teams.

M Rayquaza EX was the standout mover, up 144.74% in 30 days to $88.18, with a PSA 10 average of $1,210.80. That's a huge spread, and it screams condition sensitivity. Reshiram & Charizard GX also jumped 144.15% to $23.03, while Gengar from Unbroken Bonds climbed 142.87% to $25.27. That's not random. Big-name Pokemon with established collector demand are soaking up attention while weaker names get sold off.

Japanese side quests are still alive, but they're getting more selective.

Yesterday's brief pointed to Japanese singles getting most of the attention, and today's data mostly backs that up. Team Rocket's Mimikyu GX reached $299.67, up 144.07%, and the oddball The Puzzle of Pokemon Tower? from Japanese Vending hit $37.35, up 144.93%. On the flip side, not every Japanese card is safe. Virizion EX 1st Edition fell 49.31% to $73.72, Hypno from Mystery of the Fossils dropped 49.61% to $14.55, and Uxie from Secret of the Lakes lost 49.36% to $19.99. So yes, Japanese is active, but buyers are cherry-picking the stuff with stronger art, character appeal, or scarcer release history.

Sealed still has one clear winner, and ripping math hasn't changed.

Shining Legends remains the best-looking rip on the board with a 2.87x pack EV ratio and 187% margin. That's still excellent and still way ahead of the field. White Flare is basically breakeven at 1.04x, which means you can justify a rip if you want the fun, but not because it's some hidden value play. Pitch Black stays rough at 0.72x, a -28% margin. Nothing in today's singles data changes that sealed pecking order.

That kind of crossover between price action and grading upside is exactly what you want to see.

The mood online is mixed, but a few names are clearly turning heads. Pikachu VMAX sentiment improved to 62.5 across 4 mentions, which isn't huge volume, but it's the strongest positive signal in today's set. Detective Pikachu/SV-P also ticked up with a 60.0 sentiment score, though mention count is light.

On the weak side, Charizard ex sentiment slipped to -20.0, and both Bugsy's Scizor and Malamar EX also showed negative readings.
