Vintage oddballs run while 30th Celebration builds

Old scarce cards keep ripping as new 30th reveals support sealed demand

Today's market has two clear lanes. First, collectors are still leaning into 30th Celebration after the latest Legendary Birds and Pikachu reveals, and that support looks stronger for sealed product than for individual promos. Second, older low-pop cards, especially weird vintage holos and reverse holos, are still ripping higher, which tells you scarcity is doing more work than broad demand.
The gap between sealed EV and singles is also getting harder to ignore. Shining Legends still screens as a strong rip at 3.0x pack EV, while newer product like White Flare sits basically at breakeven and Crown Zenith remains upside-down on pack value.
Top stories
30th Celebration reveals are helping sealed more than singles.
The official reveal of Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and another Pikachu gave collectors a fresh reason to watch September 16. The key read-through is simple, people are getting more interested in the set as a whole, not just one promo card. The Basic Energy giveaway tied to Worlds looks too accessible to create real scarcity, especially since it's identical to pack versions. That caps the upside for the promo itself, but it does add event buzz around the set.
China-exclusive Charizard and Pikachu products should get collector attention, but this is niche money.
The Charizard Collector's Figure Box at about $116 and the lower-cost Pikachu figure set give China-exclusive 30th Celebration product a premium angle. Charizard branding always pulls eyes, and sealed collectors will chase clean examples and hard-to-source regional product. Still, this doesn't look like a market-wide catalyst. It's more likely to lift interest in China-exclusive sealed and a handful of Charizard or Pikachu side pieces than move the whole Pokemon TCG market.
Vintage scarcity is still overpowering logic in parts of the market.
Look at the 30-day gainers. Groudon Gold Star from Delta Species is up 149.82% to $820 raw, with PSA 10 averaging $4,077.81. Misdreavus from Skyridge is up 149.37% to $16.47, Magneton 1st Edition Fossil is up 147.6% to $13.95, and Japanese Gengar from Mystery of the Fossils is up 146.11% to $236.02. That's not broad-based confidence. That's buyers fighting over cards that almost never surface in nice shape.
Black Bolt singles are still giving back early hype.
Amoonguss from Black Bolt is down 49.8% over 30 days to $45.55. That kind of retrace is what you see when release-week pricing gets ahead of actual collector demand. If you needed a reminder that fresh pulls can brick fast without real chase status, there it is.

Gainers
Misdreavus, Skyridge, $16.47 raw, up 149.37%Misdreavus · Pokemon SkyridgeNM$16.47PSA 10$996.75+50.8%
This move looks small in dollars but important in tone. Skyridge has become a magnet for set builders and grading plays, and even less flashy characters are getting dragged higher. The card's separate reverse holo grading spread is even more telling, which I'll get to below.
Houndoom, Japanese Awakening Legends, $95.71 raw, up 146.24%Houndoom · Pokemon Japanese Awakening LegendsNM$95.71PSA 10$1706.25+43.8%
Price action and sentiment are lining up here. Houndoom's sentiment score improved to 44.0 on 5 mentions, which isn't huge volume, but it confirms collectors are talking about it while the card climbs. This looks like a real collector push, not just one random sale.
Amoonguss, Black Bolt, $45.55 raw, down 49.8%Amoonguss · Pokemon Black BoltNM$45.55PSA 10$535.01+21.9%
This is still a warning sign for anyone chasing new-release singles too early. Unless a card has obvious long-term collector appeal, most of the easy money gets made in the first rush, then prices sag once supply hits the market.
Decliners
Groudon Gold Star, Delta Species, $820 raw, up 149.82% in 30 daysGroudon [Gold Star] · Pokemon Delta SpeciesNM$820.00PSA 10$4077.81-19.6%
This is the cleanest example of scarcity-led buying. Gold Stars always have a built-in collector base, and once a few strong sales print, the next copy gets repriced fast. At this level, raw buyers need to be picky. The PSA 10 average at $4,077.81 leaves room on paper, but condition risk is huge.

Greninja ex, sentiment up, 44 mentions
Greninja ex didn't make the 30-day gainer list here, but 44 mentions with improving sentiment is enough to pay attention. That's actual conversation volume, not a tiny whisper campaign. If copies start tightening this week, the social buzz will have explained it before the chart does.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Misdreavus Reverse HoloMisdreavus [Reverse Holo] · Pokemon Team Rocket ReturnsNM$46.83PSA 10$1759.10+25.0%
Raw copies average $46.83, while PSA 10 averages $1,759.10. That's a headline ROI of 798%, even with a modest 15.3% gem rate. This is not a bulk submission card. It's a sniper card. If you can source very clean copies and pre-screen hard, the upside is real.
Raikou HoloRaikou [Holo] · Pokemon POP Series 2NM$24.50PSA 10$803.74+33.8%
Raw is $24.50, PSA 10 is $803.74, for another 798% ROI, but the gem rate is a much healthier 27.8%. That's the better blend of upside and hit rate today. Compared with Misdreavus, Raikou gives you less condition pain and still offers a strong slab premium.
Bonus look, Cyndaquil
At $13.13 raw and $405 in PSA 10, the ROI sits at 778% with a 30.7% gem rate. That's one of the more practical grading plays on the board if you're sending a mixed vintage sub and want cards that don't need a miracle to gem.

Community Pulse

Collector chatter is split between two camps right now. One side is posting the new 30th Celebration reveals and trying to figure out which sealed products will be toughest to get outside China. Sentiment there is positive, but measured. People like the Birds, they like the Charizard branding, but they also understand the Basic Energy giveaway isn't rare enough to go crazy over.

The other side of the conversation is vintage. Houndoom and Lugia both saw improving sentiment, with Lugia posting the stronger score at 58.0 on 5 mentions. Gengar Prime also ticked up in sentiment, though on just 1 mention, so I wouldn't overread that. The loudest modern conversation belongs to Greninja ex, with 44 mentions and improving tone. That's the one I'd monitor for a near-term singles move.
