Vintage singles stay hot while pack EV stays weak

Old cards keep running, but ripping modern packs still looks like a bad bet

The same split keeps showing up this morning. Older singles, especially Base, Japanese vintage, and e-Reader cards, are still putting up huge 30-day gains, while modern pack value remains underwater. If you needed one clean takeaway, here it is: collectors want proven singles and grade upside, not bad rip math.
That lines up with yesterday's tone, but today's board is even more extreme. Several vintage and mid-era cards are up roughly 145% to 150% in a month, and the best expected value sets still don't justify opening packs at current prices.
Top stories
Vintage commons and uncommons are still outrunning flashier modern cards.
Base Set and Japanese vintage names keep posting absurd gains. Voltorb 1st Edition is up 148.2% to $28.17, Staryu 1st Edition climbed 147.76% to $20.41, and Shadowless Charmander jumped 148.16% to $12.38. On the Japanese side, Kabutops from Mystery of the Fossils is up 149.91% to $20.29, while Sabrina's Jynx from Challenge From The Darkness rose 149.34% to $15.87. That's not random. Collectors are reaching lower down the rarity ladder because the trophy cards and top holos already ran first.
Evolutions and Sun and Moon era megas are getting dragged higher by nostalgia.
M Slowbro EX from Evolutions is up 147.15% to $9.46 and M Pidgeot EX is up 145.73% to $16.06. Scizor GX from Celestial Storm added 146.24% to reach $32.11. This isn't just broad market lift. These are familiar binder cards with real PSA 10 gaps, and buyers are clearly paying for clean copies before grading does the rest.
Pack expected value still says don't rip.
Destined Rivals has a pack EV ratio of 0.73x, Journey Together sits at 0.72x, and Crown Zenith is at 0.65x. That means you're getting back about 65 to 73 cents of card value for every dollar of sealed pack price on average. Margins are still ugly, from negative 27% to negative 35%. The market keeps confirming the same thing we said yesterday, buying singles beats opening product unless you're ripping for fun.
A few recent winners are already rolling over.
Cufant from Shrouded Fable fell 49.68% over 30 days to $16.67, and a Japanese Tag All Stars booster pack dropped 49.78% to $115.97. That's a warning sign. Thin spikes are getting sold into fast, especially on newer or niche items where the buyer pool isn't deep.
Sentiment is cooling on a few headline names, but the chatter isn't broad enough to call a trend change.
Charizard sentiment turned sharply negative at -60, Dark Gyarados reverse holo slipped to -48.57 across 7 mentions, and Umbreon Gold Star also leaned negative. On the flip side, Mega Gardevoir EX improved to 70.0, though it came on just 1 mention. Translation: people are getting pickier, but this isn't a full market risk-off move yet.
Today's movers90 day trend
Scizor GX, Celestial Storm, $32.11, up 146.24%Scizor GX · Pokemon Celestial StormNM$32.11PSA 10$366.50+4.9%
This is one of the cleaner mid-era movers on the board. The raw price is still reasonable, but PSA 10 average sits at $366.50. That's a huge spread, and it tells you buyers are paying up for condition-sensitive GX cards from sets that don't get talked about every day. I wouldn't chase damaged raws here, but near-mint copies still make sense.
Pikachu, Sword and Shield Promo, $109.71, up 149.81%Pikachu · Pokemon POP Series 2NM$46.60PSA 10$1722.50+10.4%
This is the kind of move that gets attention fast because it's Pikachu and the raw price is already over $100. PSA 10 average is $719.77, so the slab premium is still doing heavy lifting. If this keeps seeing clean auction closes, it probably holds better than the average promo spike.
Squirtle, Expedition, $42.00, up 149.5%Squirtle · Pokemon ExpeditionNM$42.00PSA 10$837.42+6.5%
e-Reader demand is still real. A $42 raw with a PSA 10 average of $837.42 is exactly the kind of card that keeps getting pulled out of old binders and sent in. This move fits the broader pattern, older art, tougher grade, strong nostalgia.
Kabutops, Japanese Mystery of the Fossils, $20.29, up 149.91%Kabutops · Pokemon Japanese Mystery of the FossilsNM$20.29PSA 10$756.01+14.7%
Japanese vintage continues to look underpriced versus English at the lower end. A PSA 10 average of $756.01 against a $20.29 raw price is a giant gap. The catch is obvious, condition matters a lot, and the supply of true gem copies isn't endless.
Cufant, Shrouded Fable, $16.67, down 49.68%Cufant · Pokemon Shrouded FableNM$16.67PSA 10$108.67+4.9%
This is what a weak floor looks like after a quick run. The PSA 10 average is $108.67, but modern niche cards can lose half their value in a hurry when the listing count rises. I'd wait for stabilization before touching it.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Giovanni's MagikarpGiovanni's Magikarp · Pokemon Japanese Challenge From The DarknessNM$5.78PSA 10$633.58+20.6%
Raw copies are around $5.78, while PSA 10 average is $633.58. That's a headline ROI of 795%, with a 26.3% gem rate. Those are real numbers, not fantasy math. Even after grading fees and shipping, clean copies bought carefully still look excellent.
Pokemon Breeder, ShadowlessPokemon Breeder [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$10.00PSA 10$386.07+20.9%
Raw is about $10.00 and PSA 10 average is $386.07, a 798% ROI with a 20.3% gem rate. That's lower gem odds than Magikarp, but the entry price is cheap enough that it's still attractive if you can inspect condition well. Shadowless commons and trainers are still one of the better hunting grounds in the market.
Also worth a look, Vibrava reverse holo
Raw sits at $19.73 and PSA 10 average is $746.66, for 781% ROI and a 24.1% gem rate. That's a serious spread. Reverse holos from tougher eras keep rewarding patience.

Community Pulse

Collector chatter still leans toward older cardboard. Base Set, Shadowless, Japanese vintage, and e-Reader cards are getting the better tone, mostly because people keep posting wins on binder finds and grading returns. Sentiment on some trophy-level names is softer, though. Charizard talk skewed negative, and Dark Gyarados reverse holo also slipped, which suggests buyers are pushing back on higher asking prices.

Modern sealed discussion is more cynical right now. The reaction to current EV numbers is pretty simple, people still like to rip, but they know the math is bad. That's bearish for pack opening value, not necessarily for the best singles pulled from those sets.
