Vintage singles keep ripping while packs stay cold

Old chase cards surged again, but modern pack math is still rough

Today’s market still looks split, and the gap is getting wider. Older singles, especially mid-era EX, WOTC-era oddballs, and low-pop promo cards, posted huge 30-day gains, while modern sealed product remains a bad rip on expected value with even the best sets sitting at 0.65x to 0.73x pack EV.
That tells you where buyer conviction is right now. Collectors are chasing cards they can slab, stash, or flex, and they’re not getting pulled into opening product unless they’re doing it for fun.
Top stories
Ancient Origins and older side paths are getting bought hard
Ampharos EX from Ancient Origins jumped 149.15% in 30 days to $51.12, and M Ampharos EX climbed 146.7% to $17.70. That’s not random. We’re seeing buyers move past the usual Charizard and Umbreon targets and into scarcer mid-era names with real PSA 10 separation. Ampharos EX at $51 raw against a PSA 10 average of $1,837.20 is the kind of spread that gets grading-minded collectors moving fast.
Promo and niche-era cards are outperforming the headline names
Dragonite GX from SM Promos rose 146.71% to $89.45, while Salamence GX from the same promo bucket gained 147.64% to $17.64. Exeggutor from Evolutions added 147.88% to $4.55, and Lugia BREAK from Fates Collide jumped 149.66% to $48.17. This is a broad collector bid, not a one-card spike. People are reaching for cards that feel harder to replace, especially cards with strong art, lower visibility, or clean gem potential.
Modern singles can still run, but sealed is not backing them up
Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex from Twilight Masquerade gained 147.6% to $14.31, showing that modern singles can absolutely move when players and collectors meet in the middle. But sealed math still says don’t rip for value. Destined Rivals sits at a 0.73x pack EV ratio, Journey Together at 0.72x, and Crown Zenith at 0.65x. If singles are rising while packs stay this weak, that usually means buyers would rather pick their targets than gamble on opening product.
Some recent losers look more like air coming out than true weakness
Several cards got cut in half over 30 days. Jirachi from Japanese Legendary Heartbeat fell 49.37% to $36.33, Jolteon V from Evolving Skies dropped 49.83% to $18.40, and Slowpoke Master Ball from Japanese 151 slid 49.47% to $48.19. That kind of move usually points to prior spikes getting cleaned up, not broad panic. The one that stands out more negatively is Base Set 2 Charizard, down 49.74% to $504.11. When a Charizard is falling this hard while second-tier vintage cards are ripping, that’s a sign buyers are getting pickier about version, scarcity, and condition.
Today's movers90 day trend
Ampharos EX, Ancient Origins, $51.12, up 149.15%Ampharos EX · Pokemon Ancient OriginsNM$51.12PSA 10$1837.20+43.0%
This is the cleanest signal on the board today. The raw price is still tiny compared with the PSA 10 average of $1,837.20. Even if that slab number cools off, the gap is massive. This looks like the market finally waking up to how tough clean copies are.
Dragonite GX, SM Promos, $89.45, up 146.71%Dragonite GX · Pokemon SM PromosNM$89.45PSA 10$489.76+8.4%
Dragonite also got a positive sentiment shift today, small sample, but directionally important. Price and collector chatter are lining up. If that continues, this card can stay firm even after a sharp run.
Magneton Reverse Holo, Legend Maker, $39.33, up 150.0%Magneton [Reverse Holo] · Pokemon Legend MakerNM$39.33PSA 10$1630.05+22.9%
This is exactly the kind of card that gets ignored until it doesn’t. EX-era reverse holos have been getting more respect, and the PSA 10 average at $1,630.05 shows why. Raw copies under $40 won’t stay easy forever if this niche keeps getting attention.
Lugia BREAK, Fates Collide, $48.17, up 149.66%Lugia BREAK · Pokemon Fates CollideNM$48.17PSA 10$928.62+91.1%
Lugia demand almost always finds a floor because the character carries the card. The question here is sustainability. This looks more real than a random spike, but after a near-150% move, I’d expect a pause before another leg up.
Base Set 2 Charizard, $504.11, down 49.74%
This is the most important loser on the list. If collectors wanted every vintage Charizard at any price, this wouldn’t be happening. The drop says the market is rewarding scarcity and card-specific appeal, not just the name on the top line.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Clefairy Doll, ShadowlessClefairy Doll [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$13.27PSA 10$410.20+12.0%
Raw copies average $13.27, PSA 10 sits at $410.20, for a projected ROI of 787%. Gem rate is 19.6%, so this is not easy money, but the upside is real if you can buy carefully and screen hard for print lines and edge wear. For patient bulk-box hunters, this is one of the better low-dollar grading shots on the board.
PikachuPikachu · Pokemon Holon PhantomsNM$8.62PSA 10$368.47+44.9%
Raw is $8.62, PSA 10 average is $368.47, also a 786% ROI setup with a 17.4% gem rate. That gem rate keeps this from being a blind submission card, but Pikachu liquidity is the selling point. If you hit, it moves fast.
Worth a look if you like tougher plays, Baltoy Reverse Holo
Raw is $19.14, PSA 10 is $547.74, ROI 786%, gem rate 16.4%. Low hit rate, strong slab premium. This is for collectors who know how to pre-grade, not for casual submissions.

Community Pulse

Collector chatter is still leaning vintage, but the tone is more selective than yesterday. Dragonite sentiment improved, which matches the big move in Dragonite GX. That’s a good sign, because price action backed by real collector interest tends to stick better than a thin spike.

On the flip side, Umbreon Prime, Shining Charizard, Dark Gyarados Reverse Holo, and Pikachu & Zekrom GX all saw weaker sentiment. The Shining Charizard reading came from just one mention, so I wouldn’t overreact there. Dark Gyarados is more meaningful with seven mentions, and the softer tone suggests some buyers think a few vintage names have already run too far, too fast.
