Vintage singles keep winning over sealed packs

Gold Stars and old Japanese cards jumped again while pack value stayed weak

Today's market still looks split, and the gap is getting wider. Vintage singles, especially scarce chase cards with real collector history, kept climbing hard, while sealed pack value stayed soft, with 30th Celebration at 3.15x EV but Journey Together and Destined Rivals both stuck at just 0.72x.
That lines up with yesterday's read. Buyers are still paying up for cards that feel rare and hard to replace, while a lot of modern ripping still looks like a bad bet unless you're opening for fun.
Top stories
Gold Star and vintage Japanese names are still leading the market.
Groudon Gold Star from Delta Species was the clearest headline mover, up 149.82% in 30 days to $1,010 raw. PSA 10 copies are averaging $4,077.81, which tells you this isn't just a random low-volume blip, collectors are repricing top-end ex-era grails higher. Abra 1st Edition from Japanese Split Earth also ripped 148.14% to $26 raw, with PSA 10s at $347.86. That's a very different price tier, but the same story, older niche cards are getting fresh attention because supply is thin and the collector base is broadening.
Modern and pseudo-modern singles are still getting hit when supply feels replaceable.
Grafaiai from Paldea Evolved fell 48.75% to $8. Mewtwo from the TCG Classic Blastoise Deck dropped 48.34% to $24.82, and Mew V from Japanese Fusion Arts slid 47.9% to $25.83. These aren't small dips. That's repricing. The market is being brutal with cards that don't have true scarcity behind them, especially when buyers can pivot into stronger vintage names for not much more money.
Southern Islands and older Japanese cards are not moving as one group.
Lapras from Southern Islands dropped 47.96% to $76.40, while Porygon2 from Japanese Awakening Legends fell 48.83% to $16.98 despite a PSA 10 average of $499.99. That contradiction matters. Collectors still want old Japanese cardboard, but they're getting much pickier. Set nostalgia alone isn't enough now. Artwork, character demand, and recent sale visibility are deciding winners and losers.
Pack math still isn't supporting broad sealed optimism.
30th Celebration is the outlier with a 3.15x pack EV ratio and a 215% margin. That's strong, plain and simple. But Journey Together and Destined Rivals are both sitting at 0.72x, or negative 28% margin. So while some sealed product still works on paper, the broader pack-opening story remains weak. That backs up the declining chatter around booster boxes. People are noticing the brick risk again.
Sentiment is turning back toward iconic names.
Shining Charizard sentiment improved to a 60 score, and Alakazam also ticked higher. Mega Dragalge ex posted the strongest sentiment score at 70, though on just 3 mentions, so that's more of an early signal than a confirmed trend. The key takeaway is simple, attention is drifting toward recognizable collector targets, not broad sealed hype.

Abra 1st Edition, Japanese Split EarthAbra [1st Edition] · Pokemon Japanese Split EarthNM$26.00PSA 10$347.86+3.0%
Raw: $26, up 148.14% in 30 days
This looks like a classic low-entry vintage Japanese move. Cheap raw card, strong PSA 10 ceiling at $347.86, and very limited market depth. These jumps can stick longer than people expect because there just aren't many clean copies floating around.
Porygon2, Japanese Awakening LegendsPorygon2 · Pokemon Japanese Awakening LegendsNM$16.98PSA 10$499.99+9.4%
Raw: $16.98, down 48.83% in 30 days
PSA 10 average: $499.99
This is the weirdest mover on the sheet. Raw price got crushed, but the gem mint ceiling is still huge. That usually means either raw quality is poor, recent raw sales were weak, or collectors haven't connected the raw and graded markets yet. Either way, this is one to watch closely.
Lapras, Southern IslandsLapras · Pokemon Southern IslandsNM$76.40PSA 10$480.69+24.6%
Raw: $76.40, down 47.96% in 30 days
Southern Islands usually gets steady collector love, so a near-48% drop stands out. This feels more like a reset after overheated asking prices than a collapse in demand. I'd be interested if clean copies keep showing up under this level.
Decliners
Groudon Gold Star, Delta SpeciesGroudon [Gold Star] · Pokemon Delta SpeciesNM$1010.00PSA 10$4077.81-1.0%
Raw: $1,010, up 149.82% in 30 days
This is the big one. Gold Stars have been expensive for years, but this kind of move says buyers are still willing to stretch for top-shelf ex-era cards. If you own one, there's no reason to rush it out unless you're taking a strong profit. If you're buying, don't chase ugly copies at premium numbers.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Imposter Professor Oak, ShadowlessImposter Professor Oak [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$12.25PSA 10$407.00+12.2%
Raw: $12.25
PSA 10: $407.00
Estimated ROI: 800%
Gem rate: 20.6%
This is exactly the kind of grading play collectors miss because the card itself isn't flashy. But the numbers are loud. Even with a modest gem rate, the spread is big enough to justify careful raw hunting. Centering and edge wear matter a lot here, so don't buy blind.
VenusaurVenusaur · Pokemon POP Series 2NM$26.90PSA 10$399.36-0.5%
Raw: $26.90
PSA 10: $399.36
Estimated ROI: 789%
Gem rate: 18.5%
Lower gem rate than you'd like, but the upside is still strong if you know how to screen condition. This is not a bulk submission card. It's a cherry-pick card. If you can source very clean copies, the math works.

Community Pulse

Collector chatter is leaning positive on iconic vintage names today. Shining Charizard is getting better sentiment, which fits the broader move back into proven grails, while Alakazam is also seeing a mild lift.

On the other side, booster box talk turned negative. The mention count is still light, but the direction matches the EV data. People are getting less excited about ripping boxes when two of the tracked sets are still underwater by 28%.

Mega Dragalge ex is the one small-card conversation worth watching. The sentiment score is strong, but with only 3 mentions, it's not a real market signal yet. Good to monitor, not good enough to chase.
