Rocket cards and old promos keep outrunning sealed

Vintage singles stay hot while most modern pack EV still looks rough

The market still looks split in two this morning. Older singles, promo cards, and scarce Team Rocket pieces keep climbing fast, while sealed chatter is soft and modern pack value remains underwater almost everywhere.
That matches yesterday's setup, but today's numbers make it even clearer. The money is still chasing specific cards, not whole categories, and buyers are paying up hardest for low-supply vintage and promo names with strong grading upside.
Top stories
Team Rocket cards are leading the tape again.
Dark Charizard 1st Edition jumped 148.1% over the last 30 days to $181.49, and Here Comes Team Rocket 1st Edition climbed 148.72% to $18.31. That's not random. Team Rocket nostalgia has real legs, and improving sentiment on Team Rocket's Moltres ex, even on light mention volume, backs up the idea that Rocket-themed cards are getting more attention across the board. This is one of the clearest spots where sentiment and price are pointing the same way.
Old promos are getting chased hard, especially Pikachu and Charizard.
Surfing Pikachu from WoTC Promos is up 148.23% to $68.58, with PSA 10 sitting at $1,224.74. SM Promo Charizard is up 146.72% to $103.26, while PSA 10 averages a huge $6,811.03. That's a massive spread between raw and top-grade copies, and it tells you collectors aren't just buying binder cards, they're paying for clean slabs. Promo cards with iconic characters are acting stronger than the broader modern market again.
Paldean Fates still has life in singles, even with sealed under pressure elsewhere.
Lucario from Paldean Fates rose 146.49% to $23.00, with PSA 10 at $240.57. That's notable because most modern sealed product still doesn't pencil out on pack value. Destined Rivals and Journey Together both sit at 0.71x EV, meaning ripping packs is still a losing bet on average. Lucario's move says buyers will still chase standout singles, they just don't want to subsidize weak box economics to get there.
Modern utility and fringe Japanese cards are getting dumped.
Dedenne GX from Unbroken Bonds fell 49.79% to $30.88, Gengar from Japanese Double Blaze dropped 49.51% to $21.67, and Lickitung from Japanese Southern Island slid 49.54% to $14.34. These aren't small pullbacks, they're hard resets. In a market where buyers are being selective, cards without fresh catalyst support are getting sold to fund stronger names. The Gengar drop also lines up with negative sentiment on Gengar reverse holo chatter, which suggests weakness around that character isn't just isolated to one print.
Sealed still has one winner, and only one winner.
30th Celebration is the standout with a 2.57x pack EV ratio and a 157% margin. Everything else in the data looks rough by comparison. Destined Rivals and Journey Together both sit at negative 29% margin. If you're ripping, 30th Celebration is the exception. If you're buying sealed to hold, broad confidence still isn't there, and the declining booster box sentiment confirms it.
Today's movers90 day trend
Surfing Pikachu, WoTC Promos, $68.58, up 148.23%Surfing Pikachu · Pokemon WoTC PromosNM$68.58PSA 10$1224.74+11.3%
This one looks like a classic nostalgia squeeze. The raw card has moved hard, but the bigger story is the PSA 10 price above $1.2k. That gap says clean copies are scarce enough that buyers are willing to stretch. If raw supply keeps drying up, this isn't done.
Dark Charizard 1st Edition, Team Rocket, $181.49, up 148.1%Dark Charizard [1st Edition] · Pokemon Team RocketNM$181.49PSA 10$3225.75+6.4%
Big character, iconic set, first edition stamp. Easy recipe. This move is aggressive, but not crazy in context given how often vintage Charizard leads when buyers get risk-on for older cards. I'd expect more volatility here than on Pikachu, but demand looks real.
SM Promo Charizard, $103.26, up 146.72%
The PSA 10 average at $6,811.03 is the eye-opener. That kind of slab premium pulls raw copies higher almost by force. If condition-sensitive copies keep getting graded, raw prices can still climb, but I'd be picky. Near-mint means near-mint here, not "looks fine in a sleeve."
Dedenne GX, Unbroken Bonds, $30.88, down 49.79%Dedenne GX · Pokemon Unbroken BondsNM$30.88PSA 10$243.54+56.9%
This looks like a demand vacuum more than a bargain. Competitive relevance fades fast once collector demand isn't strong enough to catch the card. The PSA 10 at $243.54 is still respectable, but the raw chart says buyers are stepping away.
Skyridge commons and uncommons, Houndour and Magneton
Houndour fell to $34.41 and Magneton to $46.17, both down about 49%. That's ugly, but Skyridge doesn't stay cheap forever. These are the kind of cards that can overshoot on the way down because the market is thin. Not a rush buy today, but definitely a watchlist spot.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Sceptile EXSceptile EX · Pokemon Ancient OriginsNM$40.00PSA 10$1700.00+7.4%
Raw copies are around $40.00, while PSA 10 averages $1,700.00. That's a headline ROI of 799%, even with only a 20.6% gem rate. This is not a bulk submission card. It's a sniper play. If you can source truly clean copies, the upside is huge. If you can't, you'll brick it.
SquirtleSquirtle · Pokemon Fire Red & Leaf GreenNM$31.04PSA 10$860.00+0.7%
Raw is $31.04, PSA 10 is $860.00, and projected ROI sits at 796% with a 25.6% gem rate. That's one of the cleaner grading setups in today's data because the gem rate is a bit healthier than the other high-ROI names. Not easy, but very playable for sharp graders.
Worth a cheap look, Koffing Shadowless
Raw copies at $5.06 versus PSA 10 at $338.33 gives a 789% ROI, though the gem rate is only 19.7%. This is exactly the kind of low-entry vintage card that rewards patience and strict condition standards.

Community Pulse

Conversation is still tilting away from sealed. Booster box sentiment came in weak twice, once at 0.0 and again at -45.0, which tells you people aren't excited about ripping at current prices. That fits the EV data perfectly.

Gardevoir chatter also leaned negative, with 13 mentions and a sentiment score of -20.0. That's enough volume to matter. It doesn't mean the whole character market is broken, but it does tell you buyers are getting choosy and not every fan-favorite can hold price without a catalyst.

On the positive side, Team Rocket's Moltres ex sentiment improved to 70.0. The sample is small, so don't overreact, but it lines up nicely with the strength we're already seeing in Rocket cards. Reddit and social chatter aren't driving that move alone, they're confirming it.
