Vintage cards keep ripping while modern packs lag

Rayquaza, Dragonite, and promo Pikachu lead another singles-heavy day

The split market from yesterday is still very much alive this morning. Older singles, scarce promos, and high-grade chase cards kept climbing hard, while current pack economics still look weak, with Journey Together and Destined Rivals both sitting at just 0.71x EV, or about -29% versus pack cost.
That gap matters. Collectors are chasing cards they can slab, stash, or flex, not ripping modern product for value. The numbers are loud: vintage and promo singles are getting bought, sealed pack math is not helping newer sets.
Top stories
Rayquaza is leading the high-end move again.
M Rayquaza EX from Ancient Origins jumped 149.07% over 30 days to $1,112.00. The PSA 10 average is now $10,137.45, which tells you buyers are paying a massive premium for clean copies. This isn’t random. Rayquaza has become one of the safest high-end character bets in the hobby, and once raw copies start drying up, the best-condition copies move even faster.
1st Edition vintage is still getting pulled higher.
Dragonite 1st Edition from Fossil is up 149.34% to $98.81, with PSA 10 sitting at $1,912.71. That’s a huge spread between raw and gem mint, and it fits the same pattern we saw yesterday: collectors are paying up for older cards with real scarcity and recognizable Pokemon. Dragonite isn’t a flavor-of-the-week card. This looks like steady collector demand finding too few nice copies.
Promo cards are acting like chase cards again.
Special Delivery Pikachu climbed 149.16% to $461.63, while PSA 10 averages $3,946.73. Promo demand usually gets hot when collectors want something outside normal pack supply, and that’s exactly what this looks like. Pikachu always brings buyers in, but this kind of move says people are hunting prestige promos, not just cheap character cards.
Modern sealed still isn’t where the money is.
The best pack EV on the board is 30th Celebration at 2.46x, a very healthy 146% margin. Then the drop-off is brutal. Journey Together and Destined Rivals both sit at 0.71x. That means ripping those packs is still a losing bet on average. If you want exposure to current sets, buying singles is the cleaner play right now.
One sharp correction is standing out.
Mega Rayquaza ex from Japanese Storm Emeralda fell 49.64% over 30 days to $356.19, with PSA 10 at $667.71. That kind of drop after a hot run usually means one of two things: either the last sale was stretched, or fresh supply hit the market. Either way, this is a reminder that not every Rayquaza card is moving in lockstep. English vintage-style demand looks stronger than speculative Japanese spikes today.

Gainers
M Rayquaza EX, Ancient OriginsM Rayquaza EX · Pokemon Ancient OriginsNM$1112.00PSA 10$10137.45+14.4%
Now $1,112.00, up 149.07% in 30 days. This is the headline card of the day. The raw-to-PSA 10 gap is enormous, and that usually keeps pressure on near-mint copies. If you own a clean raw copy, this is the kind of market where condition matters more than ever.
Dragonite 1st Edition, FossilDragonite [1st Edition] · Pokemon FossilNM$98.81PSA 10$1912.71+5.5%
Now $98.81, up 149.34%. This move looks healthier than a hype spike because it’s tied to a card with long-term collector appeal. I’d rather trust this kind of climb than a random modern jump.
Special Delivery PikachuSpecial Delivery Pikachu · Pokemon Sword & Shield PromosNM$461.63PSA 10$3946.73+20.2%
Now $461.63, up 149.16%. Promo supply is fixed, Pikachu demand never really goes away, and the PSA 10 number near $4,000 keeps this one in the spotlight. It’s expensive now, but the card still has trophy-lite appeal.
Wailord Reverse Holo, Legend MakerWailord [Reverse Holo] · Pokemon Legend MakerNM$63.49PSA 10$168.95+43.8%
Now $63.49, up 147.52%. Reverse holos from older EX-era sets have been quietly getting stronger for months. This card fits that trend. It’s niche, but niche and scarce can still hit hard when enough collectors decide they need it.
Decliners
Lugia V, Sword & Shield PromosLugia V · Pokemon Sword & Shield PromosNM$17.51PSA 10$1259.67-11.9%
Now $17.51, up 147.14%. This is the odd one because the raw price is still low while PSA 10 averages $1,259.67. That spread is so wide it deserves attention, but I’d be careful. Moves like this can come from thin sales data. Still, if clean copies are truly scarce, the market may be repricing the card fast.

Community Pulse

The social chatter is lining up with the singles market, mostly. Pikachu Reverse Holo sentiment improved to 60.0 on 2 mentions, and Gengar EX also ticked up with a 40.0 score. Small sample sizes, sure, but both fit the broader pattern of collectors leaning into recognizable characters and older-style hits.

Chandelure also posted improving sentiment at 70.0, though on just 2 mentions, so I wouldn’t overread it yet.

The bigger signal is on the downside. Jirachi ex sentiment slipped to -12.35 across 17 mentions, which is enough volume to take seriously. That usually points to disappointment on price action, condition issues, or buyers feeling they missed the best entry. Sentiment on Altaria also turned negative at -20.0, but with only 1 mention, that’s just background noise.
