Old cards keep running while new packs stay weak

Ancient Origins and vintage Japanese cards jump as newer set EV stays underwater

Today’s market still has the same split we’ve been seeing all week, and it got even sharper. Older, scarcer singles are getting bought fast, led by M Sceptile EX from Ancient Origins and Giovanni’s Machamp from Japanese Challenge From The Darkness, while newer rip-heavy products still don’t make financial sense, with Journey Together at 0.69x pack EV and Destined Rivals at 0.68x.
The big tell is that this isn’t broad strength. It’s selective. Collectors are paying up for hard-to-gem cards and low-supply older pieces, but they’re not rewarding recent promo hype the same way, shown by Pikachu/S-P dropping 49.61% over 30 days to $16.96.
Top stories
M Sceptile EX is the clearest example of collectors moving back into XY-era chase cards.
M Sceptile EX from Ancient Origins is up 148.92% in 30 days, now at $120.16. That’s a huge move for a card that already had collector credibility. The bigger number is the slab gap, PSA 10 average is $1,427.13, which tells you gem mint copies are still treated like a different asset entirely. This looks like buyers are moving beyond the usual Charizard lane and hunting scarcer Mega-era hits with real condition scarcity.
Vintage Japanese continues to outperform where supply is thin.
Giovanni’s Machamp from Japanese Challenge From The Darkness jumped 148.59% to $22.74, while its PSA 10 average sits at $427.21. That raw-to-gem spread is massive, and it lines up with what collectors have been doing lately, buying into older Japanese cards that still feel overlooked in raw form. This isn’t random. The market keeps rewarding cards that are cheap to enter raw but very tough to secure clean.
Newer promo hype is still leaking out.
Pikachu/S-P got hit again, down 49.61% over 30 days to $16.96, with a PSA 10 average of $122.01. That kind of drop usually means too many copies came back to market at once, or buyers simply moved on after the first wave of excitement. Either way, the price action contradicts any idea that all Pikachu promos are safe just because they’re Pikachu. Right now, age and scarcity matter more than character alone.
Sealed EV still says don’t rip modern boxes for value.
30th Celebration remains the outlier at 1.76x pack EV, even after cooling from yesterday’s 1.93x. That’s still strong enough to keep attention on singles and sealed tied to the product. But newer sets are ugly by comparison, Journey Together at 0.69x and Destined Rivals at 0.68x. In plain English, ripping those packs is still a losing bet on average, and that usually caps how fast sealed can recover unless a chase card breaks out.

This is the kind of card that gets ignored for years, then suddenly everyone remembers how hard it is to find clean. At under $25 raw, it still doesn’t feel expensive relative to a $427.21 PSA 10. That gap is why these vintage Japanese cards keep moving.
Pikachu/S-P, $16.96, down 49.61%Pikachu/S-P · Pokemon Japanese Sword & Shield PromosNM$16.96PSA 10$122.01+15.9%
This is a warning sign for anyone chasing modern promo spikes. Even with a decent PSA 10 price at $122.01, the raw market got cut in half. If you liked it before, wait for stabilization first. Catching falling knives in promo cards is how collections turn into bricks.

M Sceptile EX, Ancient Origins, $120.16, up 148.92%M Sceptile EX · Pokemon Ancient OriginsNM$120.16PSA 10$1427.13-0.6%
This is the card to watch today. A near-150% move in a month isn’t just random relisting noise. The PSA 10 average at $1,427.13 supports the move because it shows elite copies were already expensive. Raw prices are playing catch-up. I still think this card has room if clean raws stay scarce, but after a run like this, buyers should be picky on condition.

Community Pulse

Collector chatter is still leaning toward older cards with weird scarcity rather than new release excitement. The positive sentiment names today were Dark Espeon at 70.0, Buzzwole GX at 60.0, and Mega Sableye & Tyranitar GX at 55.0. That’s a mix of nostalgic dark-era interest and renewed attention on Tag Team cards, which fits the broader move toward cards with stronger collector identity.

On the weak side, Mega Charizard Y ex posted -40.0 sentiment and Meganium [1st Edition] came in at -30.0. The mention counts are low, so this isn’t a panic signal, but it does suggest buyers are getting more selective even within popular character and vintage buckets. Not every old card is rising, and not every Charizard gets a free pass.
