Vintage oddballs keep ripping while pack value stays weak

Old low-pop singles surged again, but most modern packs still don't pencil out

The split market from yesterday is still very much alive this morning. Older singles, especially weird low-supply cards from vintage and early ex-era sets, kept posting huge 30-day gains, while modern ripping economics still look rough almost everywhere.
The numbers back that up cleanly. Nine quality-filtered gainers are up roughly 148% to 150% in 30 days, and only one tracked set, 30th Celebration, has positive pack expected value at 1.3x. Collectors are still chasing scarcity, not pack math.
Top stories
Vintage and niche singles are still the strongest part of the market.
Surfing Pikachu from Evolutions is up 148.65% to $11.49. Slowpoke & Psyduck GX from Unified Minds jumped 148.63% to $241.05. Light Ledian 1st Edition from Neo Destiny rose 149.99% to $35.21. That’s not one pocket of the market, that’s multiple eras moving together. The common thread is thin supply and collector appeal. Even lower-end names like Arbok 1st Edition from Fossil, now $4.64 after a 149.86% climb, are getting dragged higher. That tells me buyers are shopping binders and set checklists, not just trophy-tier grails.
Base, e-Reader, and oddball cards are getting real attention.
Pidgeotto from Base Set is up 148.29% to $9.54, Sunkern from Skyridge gained 149.57% to $10.84, and Crawdaunt from Team Magma vs Team Aqua is up 147.71% to $31.40. None of these are headline chase cards. That matters. When second-tier and offbeat cards start moving this hard, it usually means collectors are filling holes and smaller sellers are running out of clean copies. This kind of move can stick longer than a hype spike, but it also gets dangerous fast if buyers start paying any price just because a listing disappeared.
Modern pack value still isn't helping sealed buyers.
30th Celebration is the lone bright spot with a 1.3x pack EV ratio and a 30% margin. After that, the picture falls apart. Crown Zenith sits at 0.63x, or negative 37%, and White Flare is even worse at 0.54x, or negative 46%. So the market is saying two things at once. People will pay up for singles they specifically want, but they still don't want to eat bad odds opening most modern product. That contradiction matters because it limits how much sealed wax can support singles prices on its own.
One sharp loser shows how fast fresh hype can crack.
Cinccino ex from Chaos Rising dropped 49.66% over 30 days to $41.44, with PSA 10s averaging $127.61. That’s the cleanest warning on the board today. Newer cards without real scarcity can get hit hard once early listings stack up and buyers stop chasing release-week prices. Compared with the slow-burn strength in older cards, this looks like a classic case of supply catching up.
Sentiment is getting picky, not broad.
Mega Sableye & Tyranitar GX improved to a 55.0 sentiment score, and Garchomp also turned positive at 33.33. On the other side, Sabrina’s Gengar slipped hard to negative 60.0 across 15 mentions, Rayquaza fell to negative 22.86, and Eevee from Pokemon Together also leaned lower. That mix tells me the crowd isn't blindly bullish. People are still excited about select cards, but they’re getting more price-sensitive on names that already had a big run.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Mudkip 1st Edition looks like the cleanest grading play today.Mudkip [1st Edition] · Pokemon Japanese Tidal StormNM$6.28PSA 10$349.98+17.4%
Raw copies average $6.28, PSA 10s average $349.98, and the modeled ROI is 791%. The big difference here is the 76.5% gem rate. That’s far better than most of the other names on the list, which means this isn't just theoretical upside. If you can source clean raws near market, this is a real submission candidate.
Illumise Reverse Holo is sneaky good.Illumise [Reverse Holo] · Pokemon Delta SpeciesNM$12.59PSA 10$400.00-60.9%
Raw is $12.59, PSA 10 is $400.00, and ROI sits at 778% with a 40.6% gem rate. Not as easy as Mudkip, but still strong enough to matter. Reverse holos from this era can be condition-sensitive, so this is a card where centering and surface checks make or break the play.
Proceed with more caution on Dark Haunter and Tapu Bulu GX.
Dark Haunter shows raw at $14.99 and PSA 10 at $717.57 for 797% ROI, but the gem rate is only 16.1%. Tapu Bulu GX is similar, $10.10 raw, $658.13 in PSA 10, 776% ROI, 21.7% gem rate. The upside is obvious. The hit rate isn't. Great cards to cherry-pick, bad cards to bulk submit blind.

Community Pulse

Collectors are still talking about older singles more than sealed product, and the tone is mostly positive there. The chatter around Mega Sableye & Tyranitar GX and Garchomp improved, which fits the broader pattern of buyers leaning into established fan-favorite names.

The negative turn on Sabrina’s Gengar is the bigger tell. With 15 mentions and a negative 60.0 sentiment score, people aren't arguing over whether it’s a cool card, they’re arguing over price. Same story, though less intense, for Rayquaza. Sentiment today says the community still wants grails, but it doesn't want to overpay for them.
