Older singles beat sealed again this week

Vintage, TAG TEAM, and mid-era cards climbed while pack ripping stayed underwater

This week had one clear split, older singles kept winning and sealed packs kept losing the math battle. From WotC commons to e-Readers, EX-era cards, Primes, and TAG TEAMs, buyers kept paying up for cards with real scarcity and PSA 10 upside, while the best pack EV numbers stayed stuck at just 0.73x for Destined Rivals, 0.72x for Journey Together, and 0.65x for Crown Zenith.
The mood also got more selective as the week went on. Strong cards still rose, but not every mascot or promo got a free pass, and a few high-profile names got hit hard when supply showed up or buyers decided the version just wasn't special enough.
Top stories
Singles beat ripping all week, and it wasn't close.
Every day told the same story. Collectors would rather buy the hit than gamble for it. That helps explain why older cards kept running while sealed products, and even some loose packs, stayed weak. The Scarlet & Violet 151 Booster Pack was one of the clearest examples, dropping to $29.15 on Thursday and ending the week at $26.29, down 8.5% on the weekly movers list.
Vintage strength broadened far beyond the usual grails.
Early in the week it was cards like Gyarados EX from BREAKpoint at $197.39, up 149.18%, Ponyta 1st Edition at $29.57, up 148.99%, and Skyridge Starmie at $24.35, up 146.07%. Then the move spread into Base, Fossil, Japanese vintage, and e-Reader filler. Articuno 1st Edition Fossil hit $30.53, up 149.94%. Psyduck 1st Edition Fossil hit $11.69, up 146.85%. Hitmonlee from Japanese Mystery of the Fossils reached $21.68, up 150.0%. This wasn't one hot pocket of the market, it was a broad vintage repricing.
Mid-era cards and TAG TEAMs became the week's real chase lane.
By Friday through Sunday, the market leaned harder into cards from Ancient Origins, Steam Siege, Cosmic Eclipse, Team Up, Unified Minds, and Triumphant. Ampharos EX from Ancient Origins jumped 149.15% in 30 days and still finished the week up 9.5% to $53.56. Lugia BREAK rose 149.66% in the daily data and closed the week at $47.93, up 7.4%. Mega Lopunny & Jigglypuff GX hit $274.10, up 149.32%, while Celebi & Venusaur GX reached $62.78, up 148.51%. That tells you buyers weren't just hiding in old WotC binders, they were also chasing scarcer mid-era and Sun & Moon cards with nasty grading difficulty.
The market got pickier about promos, modern side paths, and even some big-name cards.
Several cards got cut in half over the month and never found much support in the daily tone. Snorlax from Sword & Shield Promos fell 50% to $46.93. Charizard SM-P dropped 47.75% to $80.75. Mega Gengar ex promo fell 49.5% to $4.90. Base Set 2 Charizard dropped 49.74% to $504.11, and Pikachu Gold Star fell 49.65% to $3,200. That matters. Buyers still want great cards, but they want the right version, the right condition, and a real scarcity story.
Japanese 151 Master Balls and other hype cards showed a mixed picture.
Mewtwo Master Ball spent the week as a good example of hype unwinding, falling 49.81% over 30 days to $67.10 in Monday's brief. But by the weekly movers list it had bounced to $72.15, up 7.5% on the week. That's not a full recovery. It just tells you the slide cooled a bit after a brutal reset. Slowpoke Master Ball, on the other hand, still looked weak on Friday, down 49.47% over 30 days to $48.19.

Gainers
Ampharos EX, Ancient Origins, $53.56, up 9.5% this weekAmpharos EX · Pokemon Ancient OriginsNM$53.56+49.1%
This was one of the week's cleanest continuing stories. Friday framed it as a grading-driven move, with raw copies far below a PSA 10 average of $1,837.20. The weekly gain says buyers are still comfortable paying up here.
Lugia BREAK, Fates Collide, $47.93, up 7.4%Lugia BREAK · Pokemon Fates CollideNM$47.93+90.0%
Friday's surge looked real because Lugia usually holds collector attention better than random mid-era hits. The weekly follow-through supports that. This still looks stronger than a one-day spike.
Mewtwo Master Ball, Japanese 151, $72.15, up 7.5%Mewtwo [Master Ball] · Pokemon Japanese Scarlet & Violet 151NM$72.15+43.5%
This was the week's reversal story. Monday said don't rush after a 49.81% 30-day drop to $67.10. By week end it had bounced 7.5%. That's not enough to call a full bottom, but it does say the panic selling eased.
Totodile 1st Edition, Neo Genesis, $14.05, up 6.0%Totodile [1st Edition] · Pokemon Neo GenesisNM$14.05+4.3%
Tuesday's call on cheap vintage starters held up. The card's raw price is still low, and the weekly gain shows buyers are still chasing lower-dollar vintage with big slab ceilings.
Decliners
Charmander Mega Evolution Promos, $34.31, down 11.9%Charmander · Pokemon Mega Evolution PromosNM$34.31-22.0%
Thursday highlighted a 49.06% 30-day drop to $38.16, and the card kept slipping into the weekly close. That's what weak support looks like after hype fades.

Scarlet & Violet 151 Booster Pack, $26.29, down 8.5%
Thursday already warned that sealed sentiment was cooling. The weekly loss confirms it. This wasn't just weak pack EV in theory, sealed prices actually softened too.
Grading spotlight90 day trend
Imposter Professor Oak, ShadowlessImposter Professor Oak [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$12.25PSA 10$407.00+18.2%
Raw is $12.25, PSA 10 is $407.00, for an 800% ROI. This is still one of the best low-dollar grading setups from the week. Cheap entry, iconic set, and enough upside to justify being picky.
Mew, Unbroken BondsMew · Pokemon Unbroken BondsNM$17.56PSA 10$570.00+51.7%
Raw is $17.56, PSA 10 is $570.00, for a 796% ROI. This one stands out because the math still works without needing a crazy high raw price move first. It's a clean collector card with better liquidity than a lot of niche plays.
Also worth keeping on the table, Suicune Holo
Raw sits at $26.43 and PSA 10 at $499.99, a 798% ROI. Light Dragonair is another solid one, raw $18.88 to PSA 10 $458.00, good for 783% ROI. If you're submitting this week, I'd rather screen cards like these than force modern promo gambles.

Community Pulse

The tone stayed pro-vintage and pro-singles all week, but it got more selective. Dragonite sentiment improved late in the week and lined up with strength in Dragonite GX, first in SM Promos and then Unified Minds. Charizard chatter was messy, negative early in the week, then modestly positive on Saturday with a score of 35 across 3 mentions as Reshiram & Charizard GX climbed.

The most consistent negative read was Dark Gyarados Reverse Holo, which stayed weak at -48.57 across 7 mentions on multiple days. Umbreon Prime, Pikachu & Zekrom GX, and Shining Charizard also leaned negative, but the samples were thin. Overall sentiment says collectors are still buying, just not blindly.
