Vintage singles left sealed packs behind again

Older cards, promos, and grading plays led the week while most packs stayed underwater

This week was all about the same split we kept seeing every day: scarce singles up, rip value down. Vintage commons, promos, Japanese niche cards, TAG TEAMs, and a few weird low-supply modern names kept getting bought, while Journey Together and Destined Rivals stayed stuck around 0.72x to 0.73x pack EV, with Crown Zenith at 0.65x. The only real exception on sealed was 30th Celebration at 3.15x EV, which stood out because almost everything else looked like a bad rip.
Top stories
Vintage kept leading, and it wasn't just the grails.
That was the clearest thread of the week. It started Monday with Haunter 1st Edition from Fossil at $23.44, up 149.83% over 30 days, then rolled through Rocket's Zapdos 1st Edition at $218.06 on Tuesday, Surfing Pikachu at $68.78 and Giovanni's Machamp at $83.56 on Thursday, and Shadowless Charmander at $10.99 plus Dark Arbok 1st Edition at $12.11 on Saturday. Sunday capped it with Groudon Gold Star hitting $1,010 raw, up 149.82%. The big takeaway, collectors broadened out. They weren't only chasing trophy-level cards. They were buying older stuff across the ladder, especially cards with strong PSA 10 ceilings.
Grading math kept pulling raw cards higher.
This wasn't random buying. The market kept rewarding cheap or mid-priced raws with huge slab upside. Monday's Sabrina's Gastly 1st Edition showed raw at $12.23 and PSA 10 at $405, a modeled 796% ROI. Tuesday had Dark Wigglytuff at $5.25 raw and $625 in PSA 10, 790% ROI. Wednesday's Zubat Reverse Holo sat at $20.74 raw and $764.37 in PSA 10, 792% ROI. By the end of the week, Imposter Professor Oak Shadowless was at an 800% grading ROI, and Forretress Reverse Holo was at 799%. That's the engine behind a lot of these moves. Buyers are hunting cards where one clean copy can still turn into a real slab hit.
Modern singles were selective, not broad.
Some modern and Sun and Moon names ran hard, but only the right ones. Garchomp & Giratina GX hit $108.98 on Monday, up 148.02%. Raichu & Alolan Raichu GX reached $143.52 on Thursday, up 149.62%. Blaziken V, Oricorio GX, Solosis, Liepard, Lampent, and Vanilluxe all had their moment too. But this wasn't a rising tide. The market was picky. Cards with thin supply, grading difficulty, or strong collector identity got bought. Replaceable modern stuff got sold.
Prismatic Evolutions and Japanese 151 Master Ball cards kept getting repriced.
This was the week's cleanest warning sign. Groudon Master Ball fell to $10.31 on Wednesday, down 48.62% over 30 days. Tentacruel Master Ball dropped to $10.45 on Thursday, down 48.06%. Slowpoke Master Ball hit $7.70 on Friday, down 49.48%. Arcanine Master Ball slid to $39.22 on Saturday, down 49.82%. The message was consistent all week, early specialty-variant prices got ahead of real demand. There may be grading angles here, but as raw singles, these were getting cut hard.
Sealed stayed weak to rip, even when sealed sentiment improved.
Every day kept pointing back to the same ugly math. Journey Together and Destined Rivals lived around 0.72x to 0.73x EV, or roughly negative 27% to 28%. Crown Zenith sat at 0.65x, negative 35%. Thursday showed some better booster box chatter, but it looked more like holder confidence than rip demand. Sunday brought one major exception, 30th Celebration at 3.15x EV, a 215% margin. That's real. But outside of that, singles were still the better buy than cracking packs.
This week's movers90 day trend
Gainers
Houndour, Expedition, now $8.27, up 11.0% on the weekHoundour · Pokemon ExpeditionNM$8.27+51.2%
This fits the week's biggest theme perfectly. It first showed up Monday as a 30-day runner because of slab upside, then kept gaining through the week. Cheap vintage, tough in high grade, real collector appeal. That's the formula buyers kept rewarding.
Beedrill, Base Set, now $6.01, up 8.7%Beedrill · Pokemon Base SetNM$6.01+10.7%
Wednesday flagged Base Set Beedrill as part of the vintage oddball run. A sub-$10 Base card moving like this tells you buyers aren't only chasing stars, they're digging into older binders and pulling out gradeable stuff.
Haunter 1st Edition, Fossil, now $24.74, up 5.5%Haunter [1st Edition] · Pokemon FossilNM$24.74+12.3%
Still one of the cleaner vintage tells from the whole week. Monday already made the case with PSA 10s near $938. This week's gain says the story held up after the first spike.
Moltres, Sword & Shield Promos, now $16.87, down 5.5%Moltres · Pokemon Sword & Shield PromosNM$16.87+0.7%
Monday treated this as a leadership promo with a giant PSA 10 spread. By week end it had given some back. That's a good reminder that even strong grading stories don't move in a straight line once people notice them.
Slowpoke Master Ball, now $7.81, up 5.1% on the weekSlowpoke [Master Ball] · Pokemon Prismatic EvolutionsNM$7.81+15.1%
This one looks weird next to Friday's 30-day drop of 49.48%, but that's the point. The picture shifted during the week. It bounced a bit after getting crushed, though the broader trend still says Master Ball reverses are repricing lower.
Decliners
Charmander Shadowless, now $11.06, down 6.9%Charmander [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$11.06-0.6%
This is why chasing after a huge run can get messy. Saturday highlighted it as a strong vintage signal with a big slab gap, but the weekly move shows the price cooled after the jump. The long-term story still looks good. The short-term move got crowded.
Groudon Master Ball, now $9.99, down 3.4%Groudon [Master Ball] · Pokemon Prismatic EvolutionsNM$9.99-2.8%
Wednesday called it a hype unwind, and the weekly number backs that up. The raw got cheaper, but the PSA 10 average still leaves a grading lane if you can actually find gem copies.

Imposter Professor Oak, ShadowlessImposter Professor Oak [Shadowless] · Pokemon Base SetNM$12.25PSA 10$407.00+12.2%
Raw is $12.25, PSA 10 is $407, for an 800% ROI. This is one of the best clean vintage submissions the week gave us. It's not flashy, which is exactly why copies still get missed in old collections.
Forretress Reverse Holo, SkyridgeForretress [Reverse Holo] · Pokemon SkyridgeNM$42.74PSA 10$968.54+79.3%
Raw is $42.74, PSA 10 is $968.54, for 799% ROI. Friday also noted a 34.4% gem rate, which makes this more realistic than a lot of the big-spread lottery tickets. Expensive raw, yes. Still one of the week's best actual grading setups.
Also worth keeping on your table, Cyndaquil from Expedition
Raw is $12.98, PSA 10 is $405, for 781% ROI. It came up more than once this week and looks like one of the cleaner lower-cost vintage plays if you're screening carefully.

Community Pulse

The mood stayed selective all week. Vintage chatter leaned positive, especially around iconic names like Shining Charizard, which posted a 60 sentiment score late in the week. But broad Charizard sentiment was negative at -60, and that says a lot. Collectors still want the grails, they just don't want every Charizard at any price.

Booster box talk improved briefly on Thursday, then turned negative again by Sunday as the EV math stayed bad. That matches what buyers were actually doing. They weren't rushing to rip. They were buying singles.

A few names kept showing weak sentiment across the week, including Yveltal EX, Blastoise Staff, Pikachu Reverse Holo, Magikarp & Wailord GX, and some Japanese nostalgia pieces. The tone wasn't panic. It was pickiness. People are still spending, just with a much tighter filter.
