Ampharos [1st Edition] Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Set Lore
As card #1 in Neo Genesis, this Ampharos sits at the very front of the first Pokémon TCG expansion to introduce Johto’s Generation II Pokémon, making it one of the flagship holos of the set that brought Gold and Silver into the game.
In-Game
Ampharos’s card flavor text comes straight from its Pokédex identity as a living beacon, echoing game entries that describe the light on its tail guiding lost people from far away.
Card History
Ampharos is especially memorable to Johto fans because Jasmine’s Ampharos, Amphy, serves as the light source for the Olivine Lighthouse in the anime and games, tying this card to one of Johto’s most iconic story moments.
Card History
Its Gigaspark attack captures Ampharos’s lighthouse-like theme perfectly by blasting the Active Pokémon while splashing damage onto the Bench, giving this Stage 2 holo a flashy, board-wide presence that felt dramatic in the early Neo era.
Artist
Because it was illustrated by Ken Sugimori—the original Pokémon character designer—this card carries the classic house style of one of the most important artists in franchise history, which adds extra nostalgia for WotC-era collectors.
