Espeon [1st Edition] Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
This non-holo Espeon is a Neo Discovery oddity for collectors because the English set later expanded to include non-Holofoil prints of cards that were originally Rare Holo in the Japanese release, giving Espeon two distinct chase paths in the same WotC-era expansion.
Set Lore
Neo Discovery launched in English on June 1, 2001, as the second Neo Series expansion, a set built around Johto Pokémon, Unown, and the Ruins of Alph—making Espeon part of one of the most atmospheric world-building sets of the Wizards era.
In-Game
Espeon itself was introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver as one of Eevee’s new Generation II evolutions, so this card captures the moment Johto’s fresh psychic Eeveelution first entered the TCG spotlight.
Card History
Espeon had a memorable Johto-era anime presence through Sakura’s Espeon, which appeared after evolving from her Eevee between 'Trouble's Brewing' and 'Espeon, Not Included,' helping cement Espeon as one of the signature Eeveelutions of the early 2000s.
Artist
The card’s artwork is by Naoyo Kimura, whose soft, storybook-style Pokémon illustrations are a defining visual flavor of the early Wizards-era TCG and give this Espeon a calm, mystical feel that fits its Pokédex lore perfectly.
