Forretress [1st Edition] Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
Neo Discovery Forretress stands out as one of the early Metal-type rares of the Wizards of the Coast era, and its Spikes Pokémon Power punishes opposing switches in a way that made the card feel uniquely tactical for its time.
In-Game
Forretress was introduced in Generation II and is noted by Bulbapedia as the first original Steel-type Pokémon in the National Pokédex, giving this Neo Discovery card extra appeal as an early TCG showcase of Johto’s new Steel identity.
Set Lore
Because Neo Discovery was a 75-card Wizards of the Coast expansion released on June 1, 2001, a 1st Edition copy of Forretress comes from one of the defining early Johto-era English set printings collectors still chase today.
Artist
This card was illustrated by CR CG gangs, a credit that first appears in the Neo era and gives Forretress a distinctly vintage experimental look that collectors instantly associate with early-2000s Pokémon TCG art.
Cultural Impact
Forretress’s card flavor text mirrors its game Pokédex lore that nobody knows what is hidden inside its steel-hard shell, which adds a layer of mystery that has followed the Pokémon across both the games and the TCG.
