Gengar Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
Fossil Gengar stands out in early Pokémon TCG history because its Pokémon Power, Curse, could move damage counters around your opponent’s board, giving this holo a tricky control style that felt perfectly on-brand for Gengar’s mischievous identity.
Artist
This card was illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi, and the art’s looming pose and dark cave-like background helped make Fossil Gengar one of the most instantly recognizable holographics of the Wizards of the Coast era.
Set Lore
Gengar’s holo rare appeared in Fossil, the third English Pokémon TCG expansion, released on October 10, 1999, which ties this card directly to the hobby’s first big wave of vintage set collecting.
Card History
Gengar had an early anime spotlight in "The Tower of Terror," where Ash encounters prank-loving Ghost Pokémon in Lavender Town, cementing the spooky, playful personality that Fossil Gengar captures so well.
In-Game
For many original Game Boy fans, Gengar already felt special before this card existed because in Pokémon Red and Blue it was locked behind evolving Haunter by trade, making it one of Kanto’s most memorable hard-to-obtain final evolutions.
