Pikachu Birthday Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Set Lore
This Celebrations Classic Collection card is a reprint of the famously quirky Birthday Pikachu, one of the most nostalgic promo designs ever made because players could literally write their own birthday onto the card.
Card History
What makes Birthday Pikachu unforgettable to collectors is its gimmick attack, which changes based on whether it is actually your birthday, making it one of the most playful pieces of card design in Pokémon TCG history.
Artist
The Celebrations version keeps artwork by Kagemaru Himeno, preserving the original promo’s storybook-style charm instead of replacing it with modern art.
Cultural Impact
Birthday Pikachu began in Japan as a special promotional card released in 1998 to celebrate the second anniversary of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which gives the Celebrations reprint a direct link to the hobby’s earliest commemorative era.
Set Lore
Its inclusion in Celebrations feels especially fitting because the set was built as Pokémon’s 25th-anniversary tribute, and Birthday Pikachu is one of the clearest symbols of the franchise’s long-running collector culture.
