Dark Gyarados Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
Dark Gyarados stands out as an EX-era oddity because its card text makes it both Water and Darkness type, a dual-typing twist that perfectly fits Team Rocket’s corrupted Pokémon theme.
Set Lore
This card comes from EX Team Rocket Returns, the November 8, 2004 expansion that brought Dark Pokémon back with the set tagline 'Back with a Vengeance!' and even introduced Pokémon ☆ to the TCG.
In-Game
Dark Gyarados feels especially resonant for Johto fans because Team Rocket Returns is themed around Team Rocket’s comeback in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the same era that made Gyarados unforgettable through the Lake of Rage storyline.
In-Game
Gyarados has one of the franchise’s most iconic story moments through the Red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage, a canon encounter in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver that Team Rocket forced into evolution with radio waves.
Artist
Illustrator Nakaoka debuted in the TCG during the EX era, which makes Dark Gyarados a nice snapshot of the period when a new wave of artists was helping define Pokémon’s sharper, more aggressive mid-2000s card style.
