Magikarp Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
This Magikarp is one of the low-number commons in EX Team Rocket Returns, a 2004 set that brought Team Rocket back into the spotlight and introduced Pokémon ☆ to the English EX era, giving even humble pulls like Magikarp a place in one of the era’s most nostalgic expansions.
Set Lore
EX Team Rocket Returns was released in English on November 8, 2004, and its reverse holo cards featured the set logo stamped in the artwork box, a detail collectors still love hunting in binder pages and graded copies.
Artist
This card was illustrated by Yukiko Baba, and the artwork leans into Magikarp’s underdog charm instead of power, which fits perfectly with a card whose only attack, Call for Friends, is all about setting up the Bench rather than fighting head-on.
In-Game
Magikarp’s whole collector appeal comes from one of Pokémon’s most famous transformations: the weak fish from the original games evolves into Gyarados, a payoff so iconic that writers have linked it to the Chinese carp-leaping-waterfall legend.
Cultural Impact
Magikarp is so recognizable that, despite being intentionally weak in battle, it has become one of the franchise’s best-known comic-relief and perseverance symbols, which gives even a common ex-era card like this one extra personality for longtime fans.
