Hitmonchan Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Card History
This Base Set 2 Hitmonchan is a direct reprint of the original Base Set Hitmonchan, preserving Ken Sugimori’s iconic artwork while giving collectors a second shot at one of early Pokémon TCG’s classic Fighting-type holos.
Set Lore
Base Set 2 launched on February 24, 2000 as a reprint-heavy English-only expansion built from Base Set and Jungle cards, making Hitmonchan part of a nostalgic bridge between the earliest Pokémon TCG releases.
Artist
Because this card uses artwork by Ken Sugimori, it carries the visual DNA of Pokémon’s original character designer, which gives the holo a distinctly first-generation feel collectors instantly recognize.
In-Game
The card’s flavor text comes straight from Hitmonchan’s early Pokédex portrayal as a 'Punching Pokémon' that fires lightning-fast volleys, perfectly matching the card’s simple but aggressive Jab and Special Punch attacks.
Card History
Hitmonchan had a memorable early anime spotlight in 'The Punchy Pokémon,' where a dedicated trainer’s Hitmonchan dominated the P1 Grand Prix storyline and helped cement its reputation as one of Kanto’s signature fighting specialists.
