Items are tools your Pokémon can hold or that you use on them during your adventure. Held items act automatically in battle, while Berries are a special kind of held item that triggers on a condition like low HP.

Held items
A held item is anything a Pokémon carries into battle. Most give a constant effect that works on its own, with no input from you once the battle starts. A few of the best known:
- Leftovers: Restores a little of the holder’s HP at the end of each turn.
- Choice Band: Boosts the holder’s Attack, but locks it into the first move it uses.
- Focus Sash: If the holder is at full HP, it survives a would-be one-hit knockout with 1 HP. Used up after it triggers.
- Eviolite: Boosts the Defense and Special Defense of a Pokémon that can still evolve.
Berries
Berries are held items that wait for a condition and then act, usually helping the Pokémon out of trouble. Most are used up the moment they trigger. Common examples:
- Oran Berry: Restores a small amount of HP when the holder is low.
- Sitrus Berry: Restores more HP than an Oran Berry when the holder is low.
- Lum Berry: Cures any status condition, such as poison, sleep, or paralysis.
Evolution items
Some items exist to trigger an evolution rather than to help in battle. Evolution stones such as the Fire Stone, Water Stone, and Thunder Stone evolve certain Pokémon on the spot, and other Pokémon evolve only while holding a specific item. For the full picture of how evolutions are triggered, read the Pokémon evolution guide.
Items in battle vs. adventure
Some items are things you actively use, either from your bag or out in the world. Potions and other healing items restore HP, Poké Balls catch wild Pokémon, and repels keep weak wild Pokémon away as you explore.
Held items work differently. Once a Pokémon is holding one, its effect applies on its own during battle without you selecting it. That hands-off nature is why held items matter so much in competitive play, where every automatic edge counts.
Frequently asked questions
What are items in Pokémon?
Items are tools you use on your Pokémon or that a Pokémon holds into battle. Some are consumed from your bag, like a Potion that restores HP, while held items act automatically during a battle. There are hundreds of items across the games.
What is the difference between a held item and a Berry?
A held item is anything a Pokémon carries into battle, and many held items give a constant effect, like Leftovers healing each turn. Berries are a kind of held item that triggers under a condition, such as low HP or a status problem, and most are used up once they activate.
What does Leftovers do?
Leftovers is a held item that restores a small slice of the holder’s HP at the end of every turn. That steady healing adds up over a long battle, which makes it a favorite on defensive Pokémon meant to stay in play.
How do evolution items work?
Evolution items are used on a Pokémon to trigger an evolution that would not happen from leveling up alone. Evolution stones like the Fire Stone are the classic example, and some Pokémon evolve only while holding a specific item and then trading. See the evolution guide for the full set of methods.
