Lapras [1st Edition] Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Artist
This Fossil Lapras uses artwork by Ken Sugimori, the original illustrator who defined the look of all 151 first-generation Pokémon, giving the card an unmistakable early-era authenticity collectors instantly recognize.
Set Lore
Lapras #25 comes from Fossil, the third main English Pokémon TCG expansion, released on October 10, 1999, which helped cement the vintage WotC era that many collectors consider peak nostalgia.
Card History
Lapras became especially memorable in the anime because Ash used a Lapras to travel across the Orange Islands, making this card feel tied to one of the franchise’s most iconic seafaring adventures.
In-Game
The card’s flavor text echoes Lapras’s original Pokédex identity as a gentle, endangered ferry Pokémon that can carry people across water, a piece of early game lore that gave Lapras unusual emotional weight among Gen I Pokémon.
Card History
Even though this is the non-holo rare, Lapras was important enough in the Fossil era to also headline the LockDown Theme Deck as its holofoil face card, boosting the species’ profile with early TCG fans.
