Houndoom Card Facts & History
5 facts about this card
Set Lore
This non-holo Houndoom is part of Neo Discovery’s unusual English expansion choice to add non-holofoil versions of cards that were holo rares in the same set, giving collectors a second way to chase one of Johto’s most intimidating early Dark-type Pokémon.
In-Game
Houndoom itself was introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver as Pokédex #229, so this card captures one of the original Generation II monsters that made Johto feel darker and more dangerous than the first era of Pokémon.
Card History
Its attack mix is a great snapshot of early Darkness-era design: Crunch sets up extra damage on the following turn, while Flamethrower leans into Houndoom’s Fire side even though the card is printed as a Darkness-type Pokémon.
Cultural Impact
The card’s flavor text comes straight from Houndoom’s Silver-era Pokédex identity, where its eerie howl is so unsettling that other Pokémon flee back to their nests, reinforcing the species’ long-running reputation as one of Johto’s creepiest canine lines.
Artist
Illustrator Shin-ichi Yoshida was one of the classic early Pokémon TCG artists working in the WotC era, which gives this Houndoom the distinct old-school look collectors associate with the Neo sets.
