What counts as a separate Pokémon?

Species. The main count of 1,025 is a count of distinct species, each with its own National Pokédex number. That is the number most people mean when they ask how many Pokémon there are.

Regional forms. Some Pokémon have alternate versions that look and behave differently in different regions. These share the original's Pokédex number rather than getting a new one, so they are not counted as separate species here.

Mega Evolutions. A Mega Evolution is a temporary, more powerful battle form of an existing Pokémon. It is not a new species and does not add to the total.

Gigantamax and other forms. Giant battle forms and other alternate appearances are variations of a Pokémon that already has a number. They make the roster feel bigger without changing the species count.

What was the first Pokémon?

Bulbasaur is number 1 in the National Pokédex, so it is usually called the first Pokémon. It is a Grass and Poison type and one of the three starter Pokémon in the original games.

The first Pokémon ever designed was a different one. According to official interviews, that was Rhydon, which sits much later in the list at number 112. The order of the Pokédex does not follow the order the creatures were actually created.

How many Legendary Pokémon are there?

As of August 2026 there are 71 Legendary Pokémon and 23 Mythical Pokémon. Legendary Pokémon are rare, powerful species tied to the story of each region, and Mythical Pokémon are usually available only through special events.

For the full breakdown by generation and type, see the complete list of Legendary Pokémon.

Will there be more Pokémon?

Almost certainly. A new generation of games has arrived roughly every three years, and each one has added a new region and a new batch of Pokémon, so the total tends to grow with every generation.
