How Mega Evolution works
Mega Evolution happens mid-battle, not permanently. A Pokémon that has a Mega form can transform once per battle if it is holding the correct Mega Stone, a held item made specifically for that species. The change lasts only until the battle ends, after which the Pokémon returns to its normal form.
While Mega Evolved, the Pokémon usually gets stronger stats and sometimes a different Ability or typing, which can swing a close battle. Because it is temporary and limited to one Pokémon per battle, Mega Evolution is a strategic choice about when to spend it, not a permanent upgrade.
Which Pokémon can Mega Evolve?
Only a select group of Pokémon have a Mega form. The list is not exhaustive here, but well-known examples give a sense of the range:
- Charizard has two Mega forms, Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y.
- Mewtwo also has two Mega forms, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y.
- Venusaur one of the original Kanto starters with a Mega form.
- Blastoise the third Kanto starter with a Mega form.
- Gengar a fan favorite Ghost-type Mega.
- Gardevoir a popular Psychic and Fairy Mega.
- Lucario one of the most recognizable Megas.
- Salamence a powerful Dragon-type Mega.
- Rayquaza unique: it needs no Mega Stone and instead Mega Evolves by knowing the move Dragon Ascent.
These are examples rather than a complete roster, and which Pokémon can Mega Evolve depends on the game you are playing.
Is Mega Evolution in current games?
Mega Evolution debuted in X and Y and featured again in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. As of August 2026 it has also returned in more recent titles, including Pokémon Legends: Z-A, so the mechanic is not locked to those first games. Availability and the exact roster of Mega Pokémon vary from game to game, so it is worth checking the specific title you are playing.
Mega Evolution cards
Mega Evolutions also appear in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, where Mega cards show a Pokémon in its Mega form and are among the more collected cards in the sets that feature them. Mega Charizard in particular is a long-time favorite with collectors.
