Mythical vs Legendary
Mythical and Legendary Pokémon are two separate designations. Mythicals were historically handed out only through special events and promotions rather than caught in the normal game, which makes them the rarer of the two in practice. Most Legendaries, by contrast, can be encountered somewhere in their games. See the full list on the Legendary Pokémon page.
How do you get Mythical Pokémon?
Traditionally, Mythical Pokémon were only available through official distributions: limited-time in-game events, codes handed out at stores or through games and movies, and other promotions rather than normal wild encounters. The exact methods have changed over the years and from game to game, so the way to obtain a given Mythical depends on which title you are playing and what The Pokémon Company has offered for it.
Is Mew the same as Mewtwo?
No. They are two different Pokémon. Mew is the Mythical Pokémon that came first, and in the story Mewtwo is a powerful Legendary created from Mew's genetics. Mew is small and playful, while Mewtwo is a taller, engineered Pokémon with much higher offensive stats.
Frequently asked questions
How many Mythical Pokémon are there?
As of August 2026 there are 23 Mythical Pokémon, starting with Mew from Generation 1. The count grows as new event-exclusive species are added.
What is the difference between Mythical and Legendary Pokémon?
Both are rare and powerful, but Mythical is a separate designation. Mythicals were historically distributed only through special events and promotions rather than caught in the normal game, while most Legendaries can be encountered somewhere in their games. The Pokémon Company decides which species carry each label.
Was Mew the first Mythical Pokémon?
Yes. Mew, from Generation 1, was the first Mythical Pokémon and set the template for the category: a tiny, rare species handed out through special events rather than found in the wild.
