What are Paradox Pokémon?

Paradox Pokémon are strange relatives of familiar species, pulled into the present from either the distant past or the far future. They were introduced in the Generation 9 games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in 2022, where they appear in a vast sunken crater called Area Zero.

Each Paradox Pokémon clearly echoes a modern species but reimagines it: the Ancient forms look rugged and prehistoric, while the Future forms look sleek and mechanical. As of August 2026 there are 22, and none of them evolve.

Ancient vs Future Paradox Pokémon

The 22 Paradox Pokémon divide evenly into two groups. The 11 Ancient forms come from the distant past and appear in Pokémon Scarlet. The 11 Future forms come from the far future and appear in Pokémon Violet.

The naming makes the two easy to tell apart: every Future Paradox Pokémon carries the Iron prefix, apart from the box Legendary Miraidon. Ancient forms use evocative two-word names like Great Tusk and Flutter Mane, and Koraidon is the Ancient box Legendary.

Which Pokémon do they resemble?

Each Paradox Pokémon is a distinct species, not a form of the Pokémon it echoes, but the visual nods are deliberate. Here are some of the clearest resemblances.

Are Koraidon and Miraidon Paradox Pokémon?

Yes, and they are also Legendary Pokémon. Koraidon and Miraidon are the box Legendaries of Scarlet and Violet, so they carry both designations at once. Koraidon is the Ancient form and Miraidon is the Future form, and both sit at the top of the Paradox group for base stats. See the full roster on the Legendary Pokémon page.

Frequently asked questions

How many Paradox Pokémon are there?

As of August 2026 there are 22 Paradox Pokémon, all introduced in the Generation 9 games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and their downloadable content. They split into 11 Ancient forms and 11 Future forms.

What is the difference between Ancient and Future Paradox Pokémon?

Ancient Paradox Pokémon are prehistoric-looking relatives found in Pokémon Scarlet, while Future Paradox Pokémon are robotic, machine-like relatives found in Pokémon Violet. Future forms all carry the "Iron" prefix in their names, apart from the box Legendary Miraidon.

Are Koraidon and Miraidon Paradox Pokémon?

Yes. Koraidon and Miraidon are both Paradox Pokémon and the box Legendaries of Scarlet and Violet, so they carry both labels at once. Koraidon is the Ancient one and Miraidon is the Future one.

Do Paradox Pokémon evolve?

No. Every Paradox Pokémon is a single-stage species with no evolutions, which is one reason they feel set apart from the modern Pokémon they resemble.
