Ice-type history
Ice is one of the 15 original types from Generation 1 (1996). It is the least common type by species count, and it resists only itself, which makes it prized for offense rather than defense.
Its ability to hit the powerful Dragon-type for double damage has made it valuable in every generation.

Frequently asked questions
What beats Ice-type Pokémon?
Ice-type Pokémon take double damage from Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel moves.
What are Ice-type Pokémon strong against?
Ice moves are super effective against Grass, Ground, Flying, and Dragon, dealing double damage.
Why are Ice-type Pokémon considered fragile?
A pure Ice-type resists only Ice itself and is weak to four common types: Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. Strong offense but weak defense is the defining trade-off of the Ice-type.
Why is Ice good against Dragon-type Pokémon?
Ice moves are super effective against Dragon-types, and for a long time Ice was one of the few reliable ways to hit them. That single matchup keeps Ice valuable despite its defensive weaknesses.
