Poison is one of the 18 Pokémon types. Poison-type Pokémon are defensively sturdy against several common types and are the main way to hit Fairy-types hard, but their attacks do nothing to Steel.
Poison-type Pokémon are weak to Ground and Psychic and resist Grass, Fighting, Poison, Bug, and Fairy. There are 83 Poison-type Pokémon as of August 2026.

What beats Poison-type Pokémon?
A pure Poison-type Pokémon takes double damage from Ground and Psychic moves. It takes reduced damage from Grass, Fighting, Poison, Bug, and Fairy moves.
Remember that many Poison-type Pokémon have a second type, which changes this list. A second type can add new weaknesses, cancel out an existing one, or turn a weakness into a four-times weakness when both types share it.
What are Poison-types strong against?
Poison moves are super effective against Grass and Fairy, dealing double damage to those types. They deal reduced damage to Poison, Ground, Rock, and Ghost. They have no effect at all on Steel.

Poison-type history
Poison is one of the 15 original types from Generation 1 (1996). For years it was seen as a weak attacking type with limited coverage.
The arrival of Fairy in Generation 6 (2013) gave Poison new value, since Poison is super effective against Fairy. Steel-types remain completely immune to Poison damage.
