Steel is one of the 18 Pokémon types. Steel-type Pokémon have the best defensive typing in the game, resisting ten different types and being immune to Poison, though their attacks favor Ice, Rock, and Fairy.

Steel-type Pokémon are weak to Fire, Fighting, and Ground, resist Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy, and immune to Poison. There are 65 Steel-type Pokémon as of August 2026.

What beats Steel-type Pokémon?

A pure Steel-type Pokémon takes double damage from Fire, Fighting, and Ground moves. It takes reduced damage from Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy moves. It is immune to Poison moves, taking no damage at all.

Remember that many Steel-type Pokémon have a second type, which changes this list. A second type can add new weaknesses, cancel out an existing one, or turn a weakness into a four-times weakness when both types share it.

What are Steel-types strong against?

Steel moves are super effective against Ice, Rock, and Fairy, dealing double damage to those types. They deal reduced damage to Fire, Water, Electric, and Steel.

Steel-type history

Steel is one of two types added in Generation 2 (2000), alongside Dark. It was designed as a fortress type, resisting more attacking types than any other.

Its resistance profile was slightly reduced in Generation 6 (2013), when it lost its resistances to Ghost and Dark.
