Water-type history
Water is one of the original 15 types from Generation 1 (1996). It has been the most populous type in nearly every generation, in part because so many regions are built around seas, rivers, and coastlines.
Its role as the safe, flexible pick that resists Fire, Ice, Steel, and itself has never changed.

Frequently asked questions
What beats Water-type Pokémon?
Water-type Pokémon take double damage from Electric and Grass moves.
What are Water-type Pokémon strong against?
Water moves are super effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock, dealing double damage.
Why are there so many Water-type Pokémon?
Water is the most common type by species count. Most Pokémon regions include oceans, lakes, and rivers, so nearly every game adds a large group of Water-types tied to those environments.
What beats a Water/Ground Pokémon?
A Water/Ground Pokémon has a single but severe weakness: Grass moves hit it for quadruple damage, because Grass is super effective against both Water and Ground. Outside of Grass, that combination resists or is immune to most other attacks.
